Some Thoughts on Writing

Here are a few quotes on writing and writers to help you start the second quarter of 2009 in the right frame of mind:

Writers aren't exactly people.... they're a whole bunch of people trying to be one person.
~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

Work every day. No matter what has happened the day or night before, get up and bite on the nail.
~ Ernest Hemingway

Writing is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.
~ Winston Churchill

The role of the writer is not to say what we can all say but what we are unable to say.
~ Anais Nin

Hard writing makes easy reading.
~ Wallace Stegner

Destroying Lives

In this post I want to talk to you about stigma and discrimination. These are just words, but they carry the power to destroy lives.

Stigma is a negative attitude toward any given characteristic of a person. This is often a broad and community issue fueled by discriminatory behavior of even a few and belief in untruths about those characteristics. Stigma is considered to be a negative portion of discrimination.

Discrimination is the treatment or consideration of a group by way of class or cate… Continue

Seeing myself in him

Have you ever looked for yourself in your child? I'm not talking about eyes, nose or other physical features, or even intelligence or attitude. I'm talking about behaviors. As a parent who has autism, I guess I have a semi-unique perspective on this. Most parents of autistic children are not such themselves.

Denver can get very aggressive with his toys to the point of breaking them. This is because he's trying to make what's happening with the toy as much like what ever he saw on television or… Continue

Hi, I'm thewildeman

I'm Dave Wilde, an aspiring author and artist. I am a survivor of bipolar, autism, and abuse. I grew up with no one knowing the conditions that I have and have had to completely relearn myself over the last four years.

Now, I am an advocate on all three subjects and post my blogs to help others. I'm on a lot of social sites and if you are on them, feel free to look up thewildeman2 and add me. I will be putting more blogs here as I go, but you can easily catch up with most of my writing at any o… Continue

Oooo! That's Gross!

We all know that line quite well probably from the children or young people who surround us. Yet, if we're honest, there are times in our own lives where that very quote fits a scene before us. It usually isn't a dissected frog that grosses us out, though.

For me the grossest thing I see on a daily basis is the use of words to hurt someone because they're different from what we see as the normal in our lives, and not just the physically different either. We are all different in our looks and be… Continue

The Sensual Taste of A Spring Day

Spring is lovely here this year, cool and beautifully green. I often get much of my inspiration for my writing from the views of the seasons and those sensual sounds, smells and feelings that the outdoors surrounds us with on a daily basis. Tonight I stood out on our patio watching the light evaporate as the sun disappeared and the smells of our neighborhood were totally cool, wet, and so spring - it was intoxicating!

One of the neighbors had a fire for their kids and the smell of toasti… Continue

Editorial Guidelines & Communicty Rules

Just a reminder of what we are all about before trouble rears its ugly head and spoils the amazing network we are building here. So here they are:

First, BE NICE (homage to Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse). I think we are all adults here, so let's act like it. Be Nice to each other. Respect the fact that experience has taught us all different lessons and that there is room here for everyone's perspective. We won't all agree on everything all the time. And disagreements are part of the creative and growth processes. Be Nice, especially when you disagree with someone. Argue the merits of an issue. Do Not Personally Attack Your Fellow Writers. Do Not Insult or Belittle Them. If you are going to criticize them, do so constructively. Let's help each other succeed rather than tearing each other down. Treat your fellow writers the way you would like them to treat you. Be Nice.

Second, Be Open-minded and Generous. We are truly an international group. Inevitably, miscommunication will occur. Some things, like humor, slang and popular culture, do not always translate well. If you unintentionally offend someone, apologize. If someone offends you, take time to explain what was offensive and why. Give the other person the opportunity to apologize. If you don't understand something, ask. Don't take a request to explain yourself as an attack. See it as an opportunity to expand your world and someone else's.

Finally, Be Consistent. This primarily deals with content organization. As we grow, it's going to become more and more challenging to keep track of things. When you begin to type, please keep these rules in mind. Use the Blog space on your Member Page to voice opinions, make observations, report news and post work samples. Use the Forums to ask questions, request help or input and start discussions. Select the best Category for the conversation you are initiating but don't be surprised if the conversation moves.

Many of us maintain blogs and websites elsewhere. Feel free to include links to your blog in your signature or comments. You can also put an RSS feed of it on your member page. For the time being, I would prefer that we do not promote individual businesses or services, at least not the group at large. Please do not post blatant marketing/advertising messages in your blog unless you are asking fellow members for a critique of it. If you have an announcement or know of an event that ought to be featured on the front page of the site, please contact me directly so we can discuss it.
